♣️Aster is known for adapting. It can do well in full sun or partial shade, and it's very cold tolerant. It grows readily from Aster seeds and produces abundant flowers in shades of purple throughout the summer and into early autumn. Asters are known for strong flowering stalks with large flower heads. The flowers provide a good source of nectar for bees.

Flower Care

Asters perform best in full sun, but they will also provide a nice display in partial shade. Aster plants prefer to be in well-drained soil that has been incorporated with organic matter.

Removal of spent flowering stalks can be accomplished with a set of pruners or scissors. 'Deadheading' encourages new blooms. Make the cut just above the basal rosette of leaves.

How to Grow

Sow Aster flower seed indoors in early spring using starter mix. Press flower seed into soil and barely cover. Transplant into the garden 12 inches apart. For areas with long growing season, Aster seeds can be started directly outdoors after frost danger has passed.

A: Many asters are hardy perennials but the annual aster, or China Aster, is not hardy and is grown as an annual.

Q: Are they good for cutting?

A: Yes, they are excellent for cut flowers! Cut when 2/3 of the way open.

Q: Why haven’t my asters bloomed?

A: There are a number of possible causes for this. Asters need full sun to grow well and bloom. They may be getting too much nitrogen, not have enough other nutrients, they may be stressed by drought or too much water, or it may just be too early. Asters bloom in fall, when days are growing shorter.

Q: Can I grow China aster in containers?

A: Yes, just be mindful that they will not bloom until later summer, so combine them with summer bloomers. Make sure the container is large; they grow 24 inches tall, and use a commercial potting mix.
